For the many visitors coming to the Museum of East Asian Art, objects in the museum’s collection may appear exotic and unfamiliar. It is nevertheless possible to appreciate the beauty of foreign objects without knowing much about their history or cultural context.
The Museum has worked with illustrator Chloe Regan, who graduated from the Royal College of Art with a MA degree, to explore different ways of seeing an object. Looking from different angles and observing details, standing from a distance as well as sitting close to the cabinets, Chloe Regan has created a series of drawings showing how she engages with unfamiliar works of art by focusing on their shape, the effect of light and shade as well as surface decoration and texture.
The exhibition opens Saturday 1 October. We invite you to celebrate the opening by exploring our collections from different perspectives and sketching your favourite object. In the afternoon our education team will help guide you through the drawing process from 13:30 onward. All ages are welcome!
Our Learning team has developed a series brand-new school learning experience actives to compliment the exhibition – “WAYS OF SEEING: Observe and sketching“
In this learning experience, we invite students to handle objects from our education collection, discuss ways of seeing and East Asian aesthetics. Students will create their own DIY sketch book with a theme of their choice.
