Join Dr Theresa Munford, Chinese literature teacher, for this opportunity to explore Chinese poetry from the Tang Dynasty (618 – 906). Each week we will introduce a Chinese poet and explore one of their poems. We will uncover the poem’s language, imagery, and symbolism, illustrated by objects in the Museum’s collection. No previous experience or knowledge of Chinese language is required.
Workshop 2: Wang Wei
In our poetry second workshop we will be exploring the life and work of Wang Wei (701-761), looking at his poem ‘Deer Park’. Tang poems have been described as ‘deceptively simple’ and this poem by Wang Wei is a wonderful example. An apparently simple scene of sunlight through the canopy of trees unfolds like a scroll painting taking us deeper and deeper into profound themes of time and transience.
