Date: 28 June 2023 to 20 December 2023

The Museum of East Asian Art (MEAA) in Bath is delighted to present an exciting new exhibition Connecting Threads: Fashion Inspired by the MEAA Collection which opens on 28 June and runs until 20 December 2023.

Working in partnership with the Museum, and taking inspiration from objects in the Museum’s collection, students from the Art & Design department of Bath College were challenged to create garments which would appeal to their generation.

The exhibition features a selection of four of the fashion students’ designs alongside the objects which caught their imagination. These objects, along with other treasures in the Museum’s extensive collection, provided the starting point for these young aspiring designers to follow their own curiosity and learn more about the objects’ cultures of origin. Their designs reflect this journey of discovery and highlight the themes, techniques, and cultural aspects that most inspired them.

As the Museum celebrates its 30th Anniversary, this exhibition prompts a relevant and timely dialogue between our collection and younger audiences, tradition and modernity, and East Asian and European cultures, and weaves together multiple traditions and historical periods.

The Museum will be running a series of events that will explore in depth some of the themes and practices featured in the Connecting Threads exhibition, including a three-part workshop introduction to Sashiko in July 2023. For more information visit our Events Page.
