Food and drink, together with the vessels, rituals and regulations governing their consumption, are amongst the most revealing aspects of many cultures. This is particularly true of imperial China. From the food prepared for the emperors, to the colour of tableware permitted for use by those of different social status, the study of food and drink provides a fascinating insight into the lives and the arts of the Chinese elite. This lecture will explore aspects of this topic with particular reference to the inhabitants of the imperial court.
