Date: 25 February 2021
Time: 18:00 - 19:15
Location: Zoom online
Admission: Public £48 for the full course or £10 per workshop; MEAA Friends & Students £38 for the full course or £8 per workshop

Join Dr Theresa Munford, Chinese literature teacher, for this opportunity to explore Chinese poetry from the Tang Dynasty (618 – 906). Each week we will introduce a Chinese poet and explore one of their poems. We will uncover the poem’s language, imagery, and symbolism, illustrated by objects in the Museum’s collection. No previous experience or knowledge of Chinese language is required.

Workshop 6: Yu Xuanji

In our last workshop we will be exploring the life and work of Yu Xuanji (844-871), looking at her poem ‘On the River’. Xuanji’s short life was one of extremes, from concubine to Daoist nun and finally her death by execution on the charge of murder. The poem is set on a boat like the previous poetry workshop, but this time a pleasure boat. On the surface it is a romantic poem but one that also touches on Daoist ideas of reality and existence.

Previous event participants have described this workshop as:
“One of the best online museum activities I have attended, both for learning content and technical presentation”
“[Theresa] was extremely knowledgeable and conducted the session in the perfect manner – scholarly but not too formal”.
