Join us for the first Friday Late event of the year as we immerse ourselves in the enchanting Japanese Tanabata Festival, also known as the Star Festival. This extraordinary celebration is rooted in a Chinese legend that recounts the tale of two star-crossed lovers who transformed into the celestial bodies we now know as Altair and Vega. Typically separated by the Milky Way, they are granted a fleeting annual reunion on the 7th day of the 7th month.
In honour of Tanabata, we invite you to explore our galleries after hours and take part in a variety of delightful activities. Savour a cup of tea, engage in Tanabata-themed origami and wishing strip crafts, and embark on a curator’s tour of our latest exhibition, ‘Connecting Threads: Fashion Inspired by the MEAA‘ (28 June to 23 December 2023). In addition, we have curated an immersive yukata (summer kimono) dressing experience led by esteemed kimono-dressing disciple, Yumiko Jones.
Drop in any time from 5:30 onwards (standard museum admission applies). We recommend booking in advance for the 10-minute summer kimono wearing activity.
As Tanabata represents the celebration of two lovers’ reunion, we extend special discounts for couples and all types of paired attendees—friends, family, and more. Everyone is welcome!
While this event caters to adults, families yearning to revel in the Star Festival can explore our diverse program of family activities available.
